A 5 day, advanced course, developing the course participant’s knowledge and skills in the rehabilitation of the upper limb  and postural control system, with particular focus on the recovery of function, in the neurological patient.  Bringing theory into practice, we will explore the systems model of neurophysiological control, and how our understanding of this will develop our clinical reasoning, using the Model of Bobath Clinical Practice.  We will apply this to a series of patient demonstrations, assessing, analysing and developing the patient’s postural control and recovery of their arm movement and function.  Practical hands-on sessions will establish advanced clinical skills in the course participant and allow reflective practice for their on-going continuous professional development.

    Learning Objectives:

    • To have an understanding of the neural and biomechanical control of reach, grasp and manipulation,
    • To have a repertoire of treatment interventions addressing the anticipatory postural adjustments and multi-kinetic chain required as a basis for arm function.
    • To be able to use the current literature to understand how pain can limit upper limb function
    • To have examined the theoretical evidence base and in-depth movement analysis to assist treatment of weak and underactive and overactive upper limb presentations
    • To have discussed factors influencing task practice, motor skill characteristics and progression of functionally appropriate activities.
    • To advance clinical reasoning skills using the Model of Bobath Clinical Practice (MBCP) as a framework.
    • To validate specificity of handling skills through self-evaluation
